Lightning in a Bottle is an interactive art & music festival, currently in its 3rd year at its current location in Santa Barbara, CA. Conceived by The Do Lab, an LA- based event production company that has created interactive environments within larger art & music festivals such as Coachella, Summer Sonic (Japan), & Electric Picnic (Ireland), LIB is an eclectic blend of music, art, performance, workshops and green energy that will take place over 4 days this year at the Live Oaks Campgrounds on May 23 - 26th. Powered almost entirely through solar energy & biodiesel, their mission is to create an event where participants can have amazing and fulfilling experiences whilst remaining fully conscious of the natural environment and minimizing their effect upon it.
http://lightninginabottle.org/2008/

Renegade Drive-In Movie Theatre (RDiMT) is a collective of outdoor-cinemaphiles that hold spontaneous movie screenings in random & covert locations, projecting a chosen film onto raw surfaces in unconventional locations found within the varied urban landscape of Los Angeles. Date & rendezvous point are usually announced 24-72 hours in advance and participants are encouraged to maintain a low profile when arriving at clandestine locations. Chosen films have been projected onto sides of trains, highway underpasses, deserted downtown alleys, abandoned buildings, etc. No (dark) surface goes unconsidered. Due to the barren nature of some of our chosen locations, the audiences must often bring their own seating, and of course whatever refreshments they wish to imbibe or share with others. We have yet to encounter any trouble from John Law, but the possibility is always there and well, adds to the whole experience.

I am having auditions for my new movie "Aberrant Behavior" Saturday June Seventh at Mamma Buzz Cafe in downtown Oaklands Art District 2318 Telegraph Ave from 4-6PM. If your interested in the movie you can e-mail me at: aberrantbehaviormovie@gmail.com. I have already casted some of the roles and have people working on it, I just have not cast all of them yet and of course the female lead.

There will be some paid roles (of course the leads) but this is a low budget (around 25-35,000 or so) affair so it won't be a whole lot. Just to warn you.

Aberrant Behavior, is basically a love story about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. They have a very co-dependent relationship and with there disorders too , they literally destroy each other.

There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis. If you can't make it to the auditions, you can send me a head shot with resume, or whatever you want. We can then decide when and where to meet.

THERE WILL BE SOME SEXUALITY AND NUDITY FOR THE TWO LEADS, AS WELL AS MISTY AND FOGGY TO A LESSER DEGREE. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT ME FOR THOSE ROLES, IF YOUR NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THAT. THANK YOU.

I will be hiring for many roles, all ages (over 18) races, sizes, etc. But here are the main characters:
Main Characters:

LEADS:
Victor Muertos: (Mid to late twenties) Half Mexican/Half white (Half latino/half white will probably work). Black hair, down to chin and five o clock shadow. (Flexible though). Tall and thin but not too thin. Dark, brooding, depressed, prone to long winded sarcastic, cynical rants. Living off the state for mental depression, and addiction, but eventually breaks himself from the state. He hates the state, and normal life in general. He hates almost everything. He is sort of sloppy hipster, slightly emo, slight slight slight goth meets street kid. Light or no body mod, piercings, etc. He eventually lives on the street because of choice. He falls in love with Aiko. SOME NUDITY AND SEXUALS SITUATIONS REQUIRED-CAST

Aiko Zumbi (18-early twenties or look like it) Half Japanese/Half German (or Japanese, or half Japanese/Half white). Shorter than Victor, thin but still slightly curvy.
Street kid with a bit of dark hippie. Has been sexually abused as a child. Prone to violence. Prone to long winded rants, or sometimes just total silence. Dark, cynical, with a very bleak view of life. Body mods, tattoo's, piercings, fine. Dreaded or colored hair fine as well. Actually preffered. She falls in love with Victor. SOME NUDITY AND SEXUAL SITUATIONS REQUIRED.

SUPPORTING LEADS:
Pedida Muertos- (20's -40's)-Mexican- Victor's nearly catatonic - mute drug addict mother, who is usually messing around with strange men, and drugged up. Mostly abuses Victor through neglect. Mostly shown in flashbacks, but one scene in present as well. Young actress aged to look older in present, or vice versa.

Misty & Foggy (20's) two girls that Victor and Chad meet at the bar, who are wasted, and act and look like twins. Very ditzy, drunk, corporate, normal. They take Victor and Chad back to there place. Drunken debauchery ensues.

Spic 'N' Span (20's -40's)- One of the horrible mascots for the advertising firm Victor works for, "Spic n Span's Whiten it up" Cleaning product. They play racist cliched versions of mexican house workers. Think Samo. It's meant to be horrible, and it of course offends Victor.

Aiko's Father-
A militant cold hearted man who sexually abuses aiko. Must be bilingual Japanese & English

Aiko's Mother-
Always screaming at Aikos father. Bi-lingual fluent in German & English

VARIOUS:
Hipster's (18-30) Some with speaking roles. A house party Victor crashes.

Office workers (20's -on) Some with speaking roles.

Various small roles for the horrible commercials and promo's from the firm Victor briefly works for

Other roles as well-Not listed

I posted this on another tribe, regarding a back -up camera, and thought that since you can get this camera for about $1000, it should be here in "Budget Filming." I'm referring to the JVC- GZ-HD7. So here goes:

Well, I managed to get a perfect, used HD7. Very interesting to say the least. In comparing image quality to other HD consumer cams (although I think the HD7 deserves the title "prosumer" and I'll explain why), it seemed to surpass every other model JVC cam, Panasonic, Sony, and matched the Canon HV-30, although I thought the Canon HF-10 looked very good. Maybe it's because of the Fujinon lens. At full HD mode, the 60 gig internal disk drive handles 5 hours of "full" 1080x1920 HD resolution. Here's something I wasn't prepared for; I was under the assumption that JVC did not put anything equal to a 24p mode in the camera, and thought that I would have to use software to get that "film" look. There's no info relating to this on the specs in the JVC website. Well guess what? Turns out the camera has a "Classic Film" mode and Lo and Behold- it resembles film! However, you need to manually adjust the shutter to at least 1/250 sec to get rid of some jitter in this mode. I'll come back to this is a second. The camera has shutter speeds ranging from 1/2 to 1/4000 sec so you can get incredible motion blur to perfectly sharp freeze frames. The amount of manual control this camera has can produce outstanding results in all conditions, which is why I think this is more "prosumer." There's something else; if you shoot in dark conditions and keep the shutter speed fast, you can up the gain which produces a muted color, grainy effect that is not unlike scenes from the movie 300, so you have some great stylistic options here. Colorwise, the whites are true on Auto White Balance, and flesh tones are just a bit warmer than natural, creating a beautiful effect for shooting people that eliminates the need for pancake make-up. The LCD is perfectly visible in sunlight, but I actually preferred the huge color Electronic Viewfinder! Control settings for everything you can think of, including external microphone levels are all present, and even using the built-in stero mike has a "wind-cut" feature. Audio from this camera is actually better than most, including the Canon models, but I'd still attach a small shotgun mike. The camera is extremely comfortable in the hand too. The only downsides to this camera is that there is no external headphone jack, and the provided battery doesn't give you that much recording time, but JVC has two other batteries for this camera that triples the usage of the provided battery. All in all, this is really a great low-budget solution for those starting out and wanting professional looking results. You can probably start picking these up at lower prices soon, because JVC is discontinuing the camera for a rumored 120 gig Drive version..
There are some reported codec issues that I've read that requires the JVC software, so I'll post info on that as soon as I edit the first short film done solely with this.

In this non-stop, assembly line like transition from one end of the continuum to the other, relationships like parents, siblings, spouses and children and emotions like love, friendship and hatred, and, events like success and failure happen to us.

Whether or not we understand these dearest of relationships, the people we come across and claims to love, emotions, passions and events we encounter or the raison d'être of life itself is no more a concern in the rat-race for more, whether it be for money or material goods.

That joie de vivre is today nothing more than trinkets in malls and that we spend our lives running after something we will lose in less than a century along with the most precious of our gifts, LIFE itself,…is strangely enough not a concern for the PRAGMATIC and WORLDLY.

This blog is an honest and creative endeavour to understand life and spread smiles on the faces of all those we rub our shoulders against by bringing along like minded people. This blog wishes to raise these questions on a platform which will bring on one stage …both believers and agnostics…men of God and men of the world…and a rare few who have bridged the divide to understand how LIFE ought to be truly LIVED.

The long term goal is to develop film scripts, TV serials and media entities which will espouse such ideas in an era of inane and mundane media.
This is a humble beginning in the internet era which has shown the power of ONE.

In the forthcoming blogs I will be discussing ideas for film scripts and TV serials, which I intend to grow into a movement with the sheer power of internet's bandwagon effect. In the future I also intend to include ads on this blog in order to start monetizing for the future endeavours.
Here is the original posting:

I have a new movie called "Aberrant Behavior" auditioning Sat. 1/19 3:30-6:3- at the Dark Room SF 2263 Mission off of 19th and Mission@ 3:30 - 6:30. (My first movie "the period" came out through Sub Rosa Cinema can be seen/bought at Netflix www.myspace.com/theperiodmovie, as well as various other outlets)
Aberrant Behavior, is basically about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis. If you can't make it to the auditions, you can send me a head shot with resume, or whatever you want. We can then decide when and where to meet.

I will be hiring for many roles, all ages (over 18) races, sizes, etc. But here are the main characters:
Main Characters:

Emma May (20's to 30's) Actress must be thin, because character is anorexic. Very fake, superficial, manic laughing. Very self deluded. She doesn't really see her anorexia as a problem, she think she looks great though she's obviously dieing and goes to extremes to keep herself thin. She is always dressed up elegantly and thinks of herself as a proper lady even when doing something grotesque . She is a head executive at a advertising/pr firm that she gets a Victor a brief job at, through meeting him in a class over there mutual addictions. (Brief Nudity /Partial a few times)

Caseworker Joe (30's-40's) Written has hispanic, but open. Larger guy, tall, built like a shed, a bit fat but not flabby fat. Very coarse, to the point, direct "Take no shit" kind of guy. Very normal, buys into the whole big house in the suburbs, good job, etc. He is Victor's Caseworker, and is tired of Victor's Shit, and believes he is not trying to quit. (None)

Glitters- a gay gangster rapper, take everything that's a cliche and horrible about it and flip it so that it's gay (some, will also need male models)

Pedida Muertos-Victors Mother. A nearly catatonic morally apprehensive drug addict who's always sleeping with random guys and ignoring her child (Some nudity/sexual situations can be negotiated to less)

And then random visuals, nudes for some flashback scenes (of some sort of psuedo porn the main characer shot) a girl that Victor sleeps with before he falls in love with Zumbi (requires brief nudity/sexuality) and some body part imagery that will not feature the face of the actor/actress, among other thing

thanks for reading
Also wondering how it affects time in the form of setup and moving the track?

Also, what are the pitfalls, if any of using track?

My shot is in a large spacious lobby of a newly constructed hospital. I have walking and talking talent delivering lines. There are trees in the lobby area so I plan on using them as aribtrary foreground as well.

Thoughts and feedback are welcome for this documentary idea I've had in my head....

http://people.tribe.net/le4life/blog/e52e5069-a312-4783-9577-1689cfc7eddb#comments
America's disproportionate reporting on white, attractive, female victims of crime has been a topic I've wanted to cover in a film for a few years now. Below is the mess of thoughts and observations I hope to someday put together into a cohesive documentary. Brutally honest feedback would be appreciated.

IF I WAS A GIRL
...I never would've even been born, literally. My parents really wanted a boy and tried three times unsuccessfully. After my three sisters, I was on the way, but due to China's anti-overpopulation policies, my parents weren't even supposed to be having any more children. My mom told me that the nurses let her slide because I turned out to be a boy. So Chinese attitudes (not now but back then) around boys versus girls make up the main reason I was conceived and delivered, and thus gender issues are sort of personal to me.

PROSTITUTION, THE WORLD'S OLDEST PROFESSION
In high school I developed an interest in the criminology and psychology of serial killers. A statistic that always stood out for me was the high percentage of victims being prostitutes. One reason street hookers make easy targets is because the illegality and stigma of their work prevents them from approaching police, reporters, and doctors like other victims. Furthermore, do law enforcers and the media treat serial murder cases with less urgency if they involve victims with unconventional lifestyles or jobs? And how is being a woman different in a country such as Amsterdam where sex work is regulated like any other business and where rates of rape, assault, and STD infections on prostitutes are much lower?

DRUGS
Decades ago, opium, cocaine, and marijuana became illegal because, according to the media, Chinese, black, and Mexican men - respectively - were using the substances to seduce or sexually assault white women. Protecting white females as a catalyst for drug prohibition persists to this day, in far more subtle ways. Before Bill Clinton left office, he signed an anti-GHB bill in honor of teenager Hillory Farias who had fell into a fatal coma after having drank something spiked with the depressant chemical. Had Farias not been white, could her overdose have sparked so much attention in the media and led to the criminalization of GHB?

Come to think of it, what is the rate of teenagers of color experiencing such tragedies around drug misuse or abuse? I certainly don't know because reporters don't bring it up. Following the news for my work with DanceSafe.org, every story I saw about anyone who became addicted to or overdosed on ecstasy had the same profile: a middle-class white kid whose life in school and home was perfect before drugs ruined everything. How these reports highlighted the kids goes to show that the definition of an all-American teenager is still a very narrow and false one. According to the media, you should be happy if you're white and on the football team and getting crowned at your prom.

YOUNG, PRETTY, AND ALL-AMERICAN
My sisters were discussing the discovery of Laci Peterson's body one evening and I asked who they were talking about. Sarah asked if I had been asleep the past year to not know about this girl. The reason was that I never watch television or follow the news except for work. I don't see the point in obsessing with such cases - as tragic as they are - because every story is the same. And this brings me to a few more questions:

1) What populations of American women are being ignored by the media?
2) Why does this happen from a news industry perspective?
3) Does more coverage equal better investigations of cases?

Is the focus on the all-American damsel in distress promoting a certain idea of what girls are or should be? Firstly, reporters eulogize each victim as a successful student, loving housewife, or some other socially acceptable role model. Secondly, attractive images of the victim are circulated throughout headlines. What sickened me most about the coverage of Laci Peterson was that the shot of her cute dimple-faced smile was published repeatedly even though her head wasn't even attached to her body anymore. I'm sorry, but this is exploitation, not sympathy. If the media only values sexually appealing, well-behaved females, then is their reporting trend executed out of respect and sorrow, or out of a desire to objectify women and keep them in their place?

COMPARED TO MEN...
The focus on pretty white girls doesn't just exclude the majority of real female victims, but also the majority of male victims. Violent crime reporting in general reflects the urge to promote traditional gender roles - females as complacent, passive victims and males as aggressive perpetrators. The only major coverage on the assault or murder of a man occurs when the assailant is a woman. Because the context of women supposedly being well-behaved has already been established, a case like this will seem especially sensational and unique.

This ideology is shared by our justice system. Women are now being imprisoned at a much faster rate than men, and their crimes - like the ones of their male counterparts - are often drug-related. The sentences they serve are often longer and harsher for the exact same offenses. Why is this? Take any judge or prosecutor or juror who believes women are supposed to be nurturing, gentle mothers and caregivers, and present them with a woman charged of drugs or violence, and how do you think they'll react? In essence, when men commit assault or abuse their children, it is natural and acceptable compared to when women do it, and American courts are acting accordingly.

I didn't have access to a green screen studio, so I just shot everything in my apartment and had to rotoscope (trace) all the characters frame by frame to get them all in the same shot. They give you a list of "ingredients" to use (3 elements you must have in your film) and then you have 10 hours to write, shoot, edit and turn in your finished 3 minute film. The ingredients for the day were Turning 30, Chocolate, and Muffled Laugh.

I am currently in a film contest run by Apple computer. In a nutshell the company revealed a list of 11 elements on their website last Friday at 5:00 p.m.
At that point all registered film teams had 24 hours to shoot, edit, and score a 3 minute movie that had to be submitted into Apple the next day at the same time. Our project, Might of the Transit Employee is currently posted on the contest gallery! Here is the list of elements that we were able to incorporate into our piece.

- Required character name: Alex Kona
- Required dialog line: “No, you don’t understand what it’s like growing up here.”
- Required costume: leather jacket and dark sunglasses
- Required prop: ice
- Required side kick: pet monkey
- Required setting: abandoned building
- Required makeup: fake eyelashes and blue eye shadow
- Required genre: sci-fi/fantasy
- Required editing device: musical montage

Might of the Transit Employee is a mock trailer for a movie that tells the story of Biff Blazer, a full time MBTA worker, and how he becomes the unlikely hero who saves the day.
Here is the link to watch the movie.

edcommunity.apple.com/contest/item.php

If you like it won't you please vote for it! You'll need to create an Apple account (if you don't already have one,) but other than that you should be able to vote from the provided link. If we make it into the top 25 our movie will be eligible for judging from Apple's selected panel.

Thanks for your support, it is greatly appreciated!

We began a documentary in Paris and Turkey last year, and now as it gets warmer in Turkey we are going to complete it. We have a US distributor, and everyone involved will share in profits. It could be quite profitable for you and a real life changer. We are in pre-production of three others...one on black jazz in Paris after WWII until now. We have a Turkish captain/crew/cook on our 70' Gulet, 6 double staterooms still available, all with their own head (toilet and shower). Qualifications? Simply to be able to get along with people. Age? Our producer is 60, our editor is 25. Age inmaterial if you are young in spirit. If you have video experience (HD MiniDV PAL and Final Cut Pro, writing) all the better, but we are doing this to perhaps expand the focus of our documentary which is based on the mystical aspects of Alexander the Great - Title: Force of Evidence. Creative people get free reign as long as they don't sink the ship or the project. We are interested to add some human interest...profound, provocative, funny...to the program, so film making experience in not a requirement. Come for a week or two months. Email me for details.

But perhaps the best part of registering for Zannel Fest, in addition to prizes, is that you’ll also be (if you want!) one of the very first users of an almost launched content sharing network that encompasses mobile phones, the Internet, and possibly a device that hasn't been invented yet, like the PK-109 Video Helmet.

Participants are invited to submit original works in two categories - pictures or videos. Just make it fun, cool, sweet, or [insert your favorite superlative HERE].

Attention everyone. I am an Oakland filmmaker and I want to announce the premier of my first feature length film, "Stoner's Run" at the historic Parkway Theater. Please mark you calendars and support you local filmmakers.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14th 9:15pm
Parkway Theater
1834 Park Blvd.
Oakland, CA 94606
Admission: $3

Come to the screening and meet the cast and crew of this no-budget indie film. And if you had the fortune or misfortune to work on this film, come see the fruits of our labor. Stoner's Run is what indie filmmaking is all about. No money, just vision, heart and commitment.

"Stoner's Run" is about a modern day stoner who has it all. But while partying with his friends one weekend, it all comes crashing down. While trying to score some weed, Bradley and his friends set off for some good times, adventure, and of course, weed. Little do they know that they have caught the attention of narcoticsofficers who are hungry for a bust. This little adventure will turn into a journey of epic insignificance and we learn that the good times aren’t always so good.

Abused Hollywood Actresses denounce their violent lovers; consequently, the unionized ACTRESSES lure to TINSELTOWN, a throng of BLUE-COLLAR MEN.

SYNOPSIS

A furious Lesbian actress, GRACE GRAHAM, unionizes a bevy of terrified ACTRESSES, after most of them had been viciously assaulted, by some of Hollywood preeminent ACTORS. As president of a newly formed ACTRESS UNION, GRACE urges all ACTRESSES to abstain from social communication with Hollywood’s gorgeous predators.

Before long, a new social technique is implemented, whereas ACTRESSES lure “BLUE-COLLAR MEN” to TINSELTOWN for the purpose of evaluating their romantic prowess. To enact this innovative, social modus operandi, GRACE sets out to erect a MATRIARCHAL COMMUNE (EDITH CRANE VILLAGE) on an abandoned army base in the San Fernando Valley, exclusively for actresses. However, Hollywood ACTORS won’t be allowed on the premises.

But GRACE’S strategy is soon shattered when the newly erected COMMUNE is mysteriously bombed. Before long, a determined GRACE rebuilds the COMMUNE. But lo and behold, GRACE’S woes begin anew. As GRACE dines in a steakhouse near a window with her two female lovers, AMY and MOLLY, several gunshots are fired into the steakhouse; within seconds, AMY and MOLLY falls to the floor, mortally wounded by an anonymous perpetrator or perpetrators. Will the tragic arson and murder cases be solved by the hard-nose Chief of Police, MIKE SIMMONS and will the MATRIARCHAL COMMUNE become operational?

Seeking filmmaker or producer with a sound budget to produce film.
I would be most grateful for viewers, and following that, any feedback that might make future projects quality.
This is a very exciting thing for all of us here, and hopefully is one of the many fractured introductions that Whaddya Gonna Do About It? Productions have been leaking out for the last few years.
Our first feature, which predates 30.30 by one year, will be releasing soon, so there is a huge amount of product in the pipeline coming out soon for those who like our styles.
Does anyone have any suggestions on discounted ways to get final cut pro 5.0? Are there any options for no budget filmmakers who need the tools? Is sharing software an option?

I have an awesome documentary idea, but I lack the technology and partner to film it. I’m looking for someone in the bay area. I have final cut, but no Mac, I don’t have a camera, but wish to use a DVX 100, (but I’m open to others). OH, and lights!! I don’t mind renting equipment, but if someone already has access to equipment, and likes my idea, maybe you would like to work on this project with me? My degree is in Apparel design, but as elective classes, I chose film and editing. I am sure I am not as experienced as many of you, but I’m not completely ignorant. I don’t have experience in Pro tools.
I picked up a great book on documentary filmmaking, though, I want to branch off from traditional styles. I hope to start in September, as I am busy putting a fashion show together for B-man. I would like to interview people from the bay area, but I also fancy taking a trip to NY for a few days to interview people there, (I have someone I/we can stay with). I want to interview as many people as I/we can, then use only the best of the best. I digress, if someone wants a fall/winter project shoot me an email. I want to take this seriously, but have fun, and would like to get it into an indie film festival.
