okay, so i'm not sure what it's called or where to find it. but i want to be able to plug a shotgun microphone into a "mixer?" and then plug it into my camera. that way i can plug headphones into this mixer-type thing and listen to live sound as i record.

what is it called and where can i find one? (inexpensive and in san francisco.) it really doesn't need to be fancy. i just need something really simple and cheap.

any suggestions?

If you only have one microphone, you should be able to plug it right into your camera's mic jack. Then plug your headphones into your camera's headphone jack. Voila -- live sound while you shoot.

Does your mixer have to be for field recording (portable), or is it okay if you plug it into a wall? Most affordable mixers have plugs, and aren't battery-powered. Craislist works for those: Mackies are great, and can be had for about $150 used -- but they are too heavy to carry around.

But search for "field mixer" online if you need a small battery-operated one. Try eBay. Older models can be gotten for not much money -- newer ones are pricey.
